During the last academic year, the DfE launched the one off universal £650 million catch-up premium, to ensure that schools had all the support they needed to help pupils make up for lost learning. This worked out at £80 per pupil from Reception to Year 11 and who attend mainstream school. Split over three instalments, it was estimated a typical primary school would receive £16,000 and a typical secondary school would receive £80,000. Schools were free to use the funding in any way which suited their cohort and circumstances, as long as it was in specific relation to assisting pupils catch-up on lost learning.
